Your Legacy

NewLife is blessed to know Tom Zurowski, Director of Global Response Network. Tom has spoken at our company devotions on many occasions and never ceases to challenge each of us to “take up our cross and follow Jesus.” The following is adapted with permission from the “Life Thoughts” section of grnconnect.org.

Your Legacy

As I grow older, my thoughts seem to be focused not on what I have or don’t have, but what I’ll leave behind. Whose life will I touch? What kind of influence will I have on the next generation? Who will remember me ten, twenty or thirty years from now and what will they remember? Will I make history or simply be history? What kind of legacy will I leave?

Each one of us is an original. We have all been handcrafted by The Creator. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:10 that “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” We were designed with a purpose in mind. Destiny is written on our hearts.

Unfortunately, I believe that few people ever fulfill their destiny in life. They merely exist until they die, having little impact on their generation or the generations to come. They are so consumed with themselves, that they miss the very purpose for which they were created. Many people in our day are so busy looking for “the good life” that they miss out on true living. As someone once said, “all men die, but not all men truly live.”

My heroes are people who saw no limitations in their God. They knew their God and did great exploits in His name and for His glory. They spent their lives selflessly serving Jesus and their fellow man. They cared little about what they would get, but spent their lives giving. The world knows them because they dared to be different. They were not moved by the opinions of man. They saw their relationship with God as more than a ritual or a religious duty. They were people of passion. Empty of themselves and dead to their own egos. They lived in the realm I call obsession. Their books, music, service and lives have not gone unnoticed and have not been forgotten. Without caring about what they could get out of it, they changed the world. They sought only to fulfill their purpose in life, for the furtherance of God’s kingdom. In doing so, they left a godly legacy that all could follow.

What about you? Will your life inspire and influence, or will you simply fade away quietly? Will your life send shockwaves to the next generation? It is never too late to make a difference. What will your legacy be?
